Will Ruud van Sloun be chosen as New Scientist's Wetenschapstalent (Dutch for science talent, ed.) 2025 this year? From 21 August to 8 September, you can vote for the fifteen nominees. In the end, the audience, together with the jury, decides who  will win this year.

Ruud van Sloun researches how to use smart algorithms to make better and faster ultrasound images. Ultimately, he wants to make advanced diagnostics much more widely accessible. He conducts his research within the Department of Electrical Engineering and the group Signal Processing.

In this research group, various researchers conduct groundbreaking research with the aim of improving healthcare and keeping it accessible.

Enthusiastic researcher

Inspired by the way our brain acquires and interprets information, Ruud van Sloun is developing algorithms that make ultrasound ‘see’ smarter. This way, the devices can filter out the noise and focus on the really important information that can be seen.

It is his dream not only to get the image sharper and clearer, but also to ensure that it can ultimately be much cheaper and more mobile. A solution for medical diagnostics in remote and poorer areas, but also for the general practitioner, for example.

Electing the New Scientist Wetenschapstalent

This year, New Scientist organizes the Wetenschapstalent election for eight time, looking for the greatest scientific talent in the Netherlands and Belgium. This way, the New Scientist gives talented young scientists and their research a stage. Two years ago, developmental biologist Bernadette de Bakker of the Amsterdam UMC was elected .

This year, there are a total of in 2025 from the Netherlands and Belgium. Half of the election consists of a jury verdict, and half is decided by public vote. The winner wins a sum of money, but may also present his or her research at the annual Gala of Science during the Weekend van de Wetenschap in early October.

The election consists of a public vote first. The jury then chooses the winner from the five candidates with the most votes. There are a total of from the Netherlands and Belgium this year.

The winner will be announced during the Weekend van de Wetenschap (4th and 5th of October), will be interviewed by national newspaper Het Parool, and may also present his or her research during the Gala van de Wetenschap.

Vote for the candidate of your choice

The magazine New Scientist organizes the election of the Science Talent of the Netherlands and Belgium. You can vote for the candidate of your choice. Every university and science institute was allowed to nominate a single candidate. Will you help the ÔÚÏߺÚÁÏÃÅ reach the top five?
