RESEARCH PROFILE

Massimo Mischi is professor of biomedical signal processing and chairs the Signal Processing Systems (SPS) Division within the Electrical Engineering Faculty of the Eindhoven University of Technology (在线黑料门). With over 250 researchers, SPS is the largest division at 在线黑料门. Within the SPS Division, he founded the Biomedical Diagnostics (BM/d) Lab in 2012, with focus on biomedical signal processing and analysis for improved patient diagnostics and monitoring. Today, the BM/d Lab comprises 180 researchers and several clinical and industrial advisors.

Prof. Mischi鈥檚 research focuses on the analysis of biomedical signals, with applications ranging from electrophysiology to diagnostic imaging. His approach emphasizes modeling the complete measurement chain, from (patho)physiological sources to sensor physics and ultimately to diagnostic interpretation. This approach bridges data-driven and physics-driven biosignal analysis, enabling more accurate and explainable diagnostics while reducing data volumes and computational complexity.

In recognition of his research contributions, he has been invited to deliver about 90 lectures at international conferences worldwide, spanning both technical and clinical audiences. Notable among these are the EUROSON Keynote Lecture in 2017 and the keynote at 在线黑料门鈥檚 57th academic anniversary (Dies Natalis) in 2013. Together with his students and collaborators, he received two Martin Black Awards for Best Paper in Physiological Measurement (2008, 2018), >30 awards at international conferences, and many co-authored papers that received editorial distinctions from journals including IEEE T-MI, IEEE T-UFFC, IEEE T-BME.

His scientific output includes >230 peer-reviewed journal articles (> 9000 citations), one book (plus one book foreword), 15 book chapters, and over 400+ conference contributions. His work has led to 17 patents and patent applications and has been implemented in various commercial software platforms. He is also the co-founder of three startup companies.

Beyond his roles at the SPS Division and BM/d Lab, he has actively contributed to various national and international scientific communities. He is the co-founder and former chairman of the IEEE-EMBS Benelux Chapter and served as a board member of the Urological Imaging Section of the European Association of Urology. He currently chairs the Safety Committee of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology, serves as secretary of the Dutch Society of Medical Ultrasound, and sits on the Technical Program Committee of the IEEE IUS and the Steering Committee of the IEEE MeMeA. He also serves as the Counselor of the IEEE Student Branch in Eindhoven. In addition, Prof. Mischi is associate editor and editorial board member of several journals, including IEEE T-UFFC, IEEE RBME, CMPB, IRBM, WFUMB Ultrasound Open, and Sensors.
